Revision of the genus Hyperomma, occurring in Australia and New Zealand; Paederinae of New Zealand; phylogeny of Paederinae.
The peculiar geographic distribution of the rove beetle genus Hyperomma and other Paederinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) in New Zealand leads directly to one of the oldest, but still unresolved questions in global biogeography: the origins of the widely disjunct Southern Hemisphere terrestrial biota. The dominating concepts regarding the history of its biota (vicariance vs. dispersal) are based on a very limited set of organisms. The rove beetle subfamily Paederinae as a new excellent invertebrate model group can help to address this old problem. My project combines classical taxonomic revision with innovative morphology- and molecular-based time-calibrated phylogenetic inference, embraced by a broad biogeographic synthesis about the South Temperate terrestrial invertebrate fauna.
