Galathea through historyAs something quite special the Zoological Museum can display many of the objects which the first two Galathea expeditions brought back, 50 and 150 years ago. From the museum's store-rooms we have selected shipping cases, old journals, preserved specimens in spirits, sketches and lots of other items from Galathea 1 (1845-1847) and Galathea 2 (1950-1952). The first Galathea expedition also brought home much of the very extensive collection of animal and human bones which Danish natural historian P.W. Lund had made in the limestone caves of the Brazilian highlands. Some of this collection was formerly exhibited in the old Zoological Museum on Krystalgade, but it has not been shown to the public since the museum was moved in 1970. Now in this comprehensive Galathea exhibition we are once again exhibiting some of P.W. Lunds spectacular and scientifically very interesting finds. We also display some of the beautiful illustrations made by the expedition's artists on Galathea 1, long before the days of digital cameras. |
